Sewage and Water Damage Clean-up Services GTA

Sewage

Sewage is a form of black water – highly contaminated flood water that comes from sources like the public sewer or the street. Consequently, homeowners who have a sewage backup in their homes need to fix the flooding quickly or risk endangering their health and their property. To help prevent sewage backups inside a house, CPR24 Restoration has some valuable information you must know. Sewage spills caused by toilet overflows, or more generally, sewer backups are very dangerous for a family. In these cases, acting quickly is the most important thing. You have to protect your family and your home or business. Sewer backup is the most common and problematic cause of flooding in Toronto. Similar to water damage, sewage backups can cause severe structural damage to your home or business because sewage is likely to contain mold, parasites, viruses, and bacteria. It’s a necessity to evacuate everyone with a weakened immune system, young children, and the elderly as the exposed area should be considered hazardous.

Sewage backup causes

  • Clogs – Sewage can back up into a home when either the home’s drain pipes or main sewer line become clogged. For example, if one toilet creates a sewage backup, the drain connected to that toilet will likely be clogged. But if all toilets or bathtubs in the home create backflows, then there may be a clog in the main sewer line. The reason for this is the clogs that may consist of hair, grease, or other solid materials that end up in the drains.
  • Tree Roots – Trees can grow long roots that intertwine with the sewer line. Even if the roots in the yard are not the problem, roots from nearby trees can reach the sewer line and damage it.
  • Damaged Sewer Lines – In the past, pipes were made of cast iron and clay piping which didn’t last very long. Aging sewage systems have a chance to break down and crack. This can cause sewage backups and flooded basements.
  • Heavy Rainfall – A large amount of rain can overburden the city’s sewer lines.

How to prevent sewage backups

  • Not pouring grease down the drain – Cooking oil can harden within pipes; it gradually stops debris from draining, creating a clog. To properly dispose of grease or fat, it should be poured into a heat-resistant container and thrown in the trash after it cools off.
  • Disposing of paper products properly – This is essential. If you don’t take care flushing hygiene products such as paper towels, diapers, or feminine products down the toilet can easily clog a sewer line. Thus, all paper products should be discarded safely in the trash.
  • Installing a new plastic pipe or cutting tree roots – To prevent tree roots from damaging the sewer lateral, they should be replaced with a new plastic pipe. In this way, you can make sewage backups prevention.
  • Installing a backwater prevention valve – This fixture allows sewage to leave but prevents it from backing up into the home.

What to do after a sewage backup

No matter if you intend to use professional sewage cleanup services or not, there are some important precautionary measures to take as soon as you notice the problem:

  • Evacuate children, seniors, and pets and do not allow them in the affected area until it is restored to a safe condition;
  • Contact the utility companies that service your area and have them shut off the electricity, gas, and water supply to your home. If the spill is small and there’s no danger to you, you can turn off the power and water supply yourself (only if the power distribution panel and main water valve are safely above water!) – just make sure you wear appropriate personal protective equipment;
  • Open windows to ventilate the area;
  • Take any dry, uncontaminated items away;
  • Add small amounts of chlorine bleach to standing water – this will ensure some disinfection and prevent bacteria from spreading;
  • Notify your insurance company that there has been a sewage backup in your home and make sure you take several pictures of the spill, as well as the water-damaged items and materials before the cleanup process begins.

Do not attempt to unclog drains at this point – the sewage water must be removed before the cause of the spill can be addressed
