6 Reasons Why Water Pipes Burst

When you have a home, you want to avoid having your water pipes burst. Burst pipes can cause a variety of issues in your home, costing you a significant amount of time, effort, and, most importantly, money.

You must do everything to avoid your exposed pipes from bursting. To do this, you must first understand what causes it. There are six possible reasons for your water pipes to burst.

Why Do We Have Bursting Pipes?

Weather, environmental changes, physical damage, and other factors can cause water pipelines to rupture. Let’s go into the nitty-gritty of ruptured pipes.

1. Freezing

Water pipelines can rupture for many reasons. If you live in a cold area, you should be aware of the dangers of frozen water pipes. When the temperature drops below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, water in your pipes has the potential to freeze.

As more water freezes, it builds pressure on one section of the pipe. If the pressure becomes too great, the pipe will rupture.

Fortunately, setting your faucets to drip will prevent pipes from freezing. The water will continue to flow through your pipes as a result of this.

Another great choice would be to turn off your water or use a shutoff valve.

2. Tree Root Encroachment

In rare cases, tree root roots extend into the soil crawl spaces until they come into contact with other subsurface organisms (i.e. water pipes).

The majority of water pipes are not strong enough to stop tree roots in their tracks. Tree roots will continue to exert pressure on the pipes, forcing them apart until they crack.

Plant new trees as far away as possible from your water pipes. Root growth must be inhibited after the tree is planted

3. Corrosion

Your pipes may burst open in certain situations because they’ve been exposed to too much cold water abuse over time, especially if they’re made of steel. You should never have to worry about corrosion if you replace them with copper or plastic pipes.

4. Soil Shifting

If the ground beneath a water pipe shakes, the pipe can break. This often happens when construction is being done near the pipe. In this case, the best thing you can do is request that the construction crew be careful not to distribute extra dirt near the pipe. The staff may be able to prevent extra strain on the pipe by strategically discarding dirt.

5. High Water Pressure

Water pressure is crucial for proper plumbing. The recommended pressure for most domestic water pipes is 40 to 45 psi. If the pressure exceeds 60 psi in your house, the result can be bursting pipes that may explode.

For a multitude of reasons, the pressure in your water rises. It may be suddenly blasted into your home at an excessive rate and cause high water damage.

In other cases, pipe problems may cause water to slow down and speed up at inconvenient periods. In this case, you will need to contact a plumbing expert. The plumber can analyze the situation and implement a plumbing system if it is necessary.

6. Clogs

The presence of a clog is the final cause of bursting pipes. When you have a clog in your pipes, it can cause undue pressure to build up inside of them. This pressure will eventually become too high for the pipe to withstand, and it will shatter.

Water pipes can be clogged by a variety of things, including hair, washroom products, food, and more. Be aware of what you’re putting down the drain.
